If you've ever watched a server squint at a slow screen during a Friday dinner rush, you already know: the wrong POS system doesn't just frustrate your staff — it costs you money. Slower ticket times, missed modifiers, and split-check nightmares all trace back to a system that wasn't built for how your restaurant actually runs.

The good news is that choosing the right POS doesn't require a computer science degree. It requires asking the right questions before you sign anything.

First, think about your service model. A quick-service counter operation has completely different needs than a full-service dining room. Counter service needs speed above everything — fast item lookup, easy combo building, and a customer-facing display. Full-service needs table mapping, course firing, and the ability to split checks without a manager's help.

Second, ask about kitchen display system (KDS) integration. Paper tickets are a liability. A KDS routes orders directly to the right station — grill, fryer, expo — and timestamps every ticket so you can see exactly where slowdowns happen. Most modern POS platforms include this, but the quality varies enormously. Ask for a demo with a busy-service simulation, not a clean demo environment.

Third, understand the true cost. The monthly software fee is just the beginning. Hardware, installation, training, payment processing rates, and support contracts all add up. Get a total 3-year cost of ownership in writing before you compare options.

Finally, ask about offline mode. North Dallas has its share of internet outages — especially during storms. A POS that goes down when your connection drops is a liability. Every serious restaurant POS should process transactions locally and sync when connectivity returns.

The right POS system should feel invisible during service. Your staff shouldn't have to think about it. If they do, it's the wrong system.
