The right point-of-sale system can cut checkout time, reduce shrink, and give you real inventory data. Here's what to look for before you buy.

A retail POS system is the nerve center of your shop. It handles transactions, tracks inventory, manages customer data, and generates the reports you need to make buying decisions. Choose the wrong one and you'll spend years working around its limitations. Choose the right one and it practically runs itself.

Start with inventory management. For a retail shop, inventory is everything. Your POS should track stock levels in real time, alert you when items run low, and generate purchase orders automatically. If you're still counting inventory by hand at the end of the month, your POS is costing you hours you don't have.

Look for barcode scanning that actually works. This sounds basic, but the speed and reliability of barcode scanning varies enormously between systems. A scanner that hesitates or misreads codes during a busy Saturday afternoon creates lines, frustrates customers, and costs you sales. Test it with your actual product barcodes before you commit.

Ask about multi-location support — even if you only have one location today. If you ever open a second shop or add an online store, you'll want inventory and sales data in one place. Migrating to a new POS later is expensive and disruptive. Plan for where you want to be in three years, not just where you are now.

Understand the payment processing fees. Most retail POS platforms bundle payment processing, but the rates vary. A difference of 0.3% in processing fees sounds small until you run the math on your annual sales volume. On $500,000 in annual revenue, that's $1,500 per year. Get the processing rate in writing and compare it against your current processor.

Finally, evaluate the reporting. Good retail decisions come from good data. Your POS should tell you which products are your top sellers, which are sitting on shelves too long, what your average transaction value is, and when your busiest hours are. If the reporting requires exporting to a spreadsheet to answer basic questions, it's not good enough.

The best retail POS systems in 2026 for small shops are Lightspeed Retail, Square for Retail, and Shopify POS. Each has strengths depending on your product mix and growth plans. I'm happy to walk through the comparison for your specific situation — reach out through the contact form.
