Restaurants are one of the most targeted industries for payment card theft. Small operators are especially vulnerable because attackers know they're less likely to have dedicated IT staff watching for threats. The good news: a few basic steps dramatically reduce your exposure.

1. Separate your networks. Your POS system should never share a Wi-Fi network with your customers or your staff's personal devices. Set up a dedicated network for payment processing equipment — your internet provider or a local IT consultant can do this in under an hour.

2. Change default passwords on everything. Routers, POS terminals, security cameras — they all ship with default passwords that are publicly documented. Attackers scan for them automatically. Change every default password the day you install new equipment.

3. Keep software updated. Most successful attacks exploit known vulnerabilities that already have patches available. Enable automatic updates on your POS software, operating systems, and network equipment.

4. Use a payment processor that handles PCI compliance. PCI DSS compliance is the payment industry's security standard. A reputable processor will handle most of the heavy lifting — but you still need to complete your annual self-assessment questionnaire. Don't skip it.

5. Train your staff on phishing. Most breaches start with a single employee clicking a bad link in an email. A 15-minute annual training session on how to spot phishing emails is one of the highest-ROI security investments you can make.
